Menthol in Penetrex Balm: the cool first touch

The crystalline compound of the mint family that gives balms their clean, cooling first touch.

Menthol, an ingredient of Penetrex Balm

Menthol is the ingredient behind the cool, fresh sensation you notice in the first minute after a balm touches your skin. It is one of the most familiar ingredients in everyday care products, from lip balm to toothpaste, and it is one of the two sensation-led ingredients in Penetrex Balm.

What menthol is and where it comes from

Menthol is an organic compound found naturally in the oils of plants of the mint family, above all peppermint and corn mint. In its pure form it looks like small clear crystals, which is why the picture of menthol is so often a bowl of crystals next to fresh mint leaves. It can be extracted from mint oil or made in a laboratory, and both routes give the same molecule.

The scent is unmistakable: sharp, clean and slightly sweet. Many Kenyans know it from mint sweets, chewing gum, nasal inhalers and the small tins of menthol rub that sit in a handbag or a drawer at home. That familiarity is one reason menthol feels reassuring when it appears on the label of a balm.

Why menthol feels cold when the skin is not cold

The cooling effect of menthol is a sensory effect, not a change in skin temperature. Menthol activates a receptor on the skin's nerve endings that normally responds to cool temperatures, so the brain reads the signal as "cool". Thermometers would show no drop at all. This is why a menthol balm can feel icy on a warm afternoon and why the sensation fades smoothly rather than suddenly.

The easiest way to think about menthol is as a comfort ingredient. It adds a fresh, pleasant feeling to the area where you apply the balm, which many people enjoy at the end of a long day on their feet.

Menthol in the Penetrex Balm formula

In Penetrex Balm menthol works alongside methyl salicylate. The two are often paired in rubs because one brings a cooling note and the other a warming one, and the contrast gives the balm a rounded feel on the skin. The plant oils in the formula, eucalyptus and lavender, add their own fragrance on top, so the overall impression is herbal and fresh rather than medicinal.

The balm is meant for the skin over the area of discomfort, applied in a thin layer once or twice a day. Menthol is the reason the first seconds feel so refreshing, and the reason a little goes a long way.

Using a menthol balm comfortably

Start with a small amount. A thin layer spreads further than you expect and the cooling feeling is more noticeable on thin or sensitive skin than on the thick skin of the heel. Wash your hands after applying, because menthol on the fingertips and then in the eyes is an experience nobody needs.

Keep menthol products away from the eyes, the lips, the inside of the nose and any broken or irritated skin. Do not cover the area tightly or add a heat pad on top. If the skin turns red, itchy or uncomfortable, wash the balm off with mild soap and water and stop using it. The full list of precautions is on the safety page.

Where is menthol on the Penetrex Balm label?

The carton prints it as Menthol, one of 29 names in the key-ingredient list. It belongs to the group cooling and warming aromatics, together with methyl salicylate, camphor, borneol, thymol. Amounts are not published for any ingredient. See the complete ingredient list and the safety notes.

Questions about menthol

Does menthol in Penetrex Balm really make the skin cold?

No, the skin temperature does not change. Menthol activates the skin's cool-sensing nerve endings, so the area feels cool for a while, then the feeling fades.

Is the menthol in Penetrex Balm natural?

Menthol occurs naturally in mint oils and can also be produced in a laboratory; the molecule is the same. The ingredient list simply names it as menthol.

Can I use a menthol balm on my face?

Penetrex Balm is made for the skin over muscles and joints. Keep it away from the eyes, lips and the inside of the nose, and do not apply it to the face.

What should I do if the cooling feeling is too strong?

Use less next time, spread a thinner layer, or wash the area with mild soap and water. A thin layer is the best way to enjoy a menthol balm.
