Penetrex Balm is a balm for external use, made for the skin over knees, back, shoulders and neck. It comes in a 50 g tube, the kind that slides into a handbag, a work bag or a drawer at the shop.
The formula blends plant ingredients we know well in Kenya, such as eucalyptus and lavender, with two classic sensation ingredients: menthol for a cool first touch and methyl salicylate for a gentle warmth that follows.
Squeeze, spread, press. A thin layer covers a knee or a shoulder, so one tube lasts.
Mint and eucalyptus up front, soft lavender behind. It smells like a herbal garden, not a clinic.
Morning before you leave, or evening when you are home. Once or twice a day is all it takes.
At 50 g it fits a jacket pocket, a driver’s door pocket or a market bag.

Matatu drivers, boda riders and couriers sit in one position for long stretches. A tube in the door pocket makes it easy to use in the evening.

Farmers, builders, tailors and mechanics ask a lot of their shoulders, knees and backs. The fresh scent is a small reward at the end of the day.

Long hours at a laptop leave the neck and shoulders feeling stiff. Penetrex Balm turns a five-minute break into a proper pause.
Four plant ingredients (eucalyptus leaf oil, safflower flower extract, Ligusticum chuanxiong oil, lavender oil) plus menthol and methyl salicylate. Each has its own page.

Menthol
The crystalline compound of the mint family that gives balms their clean, cooling first touch.

Methyl salicylate
The aromatic compound of wintergreen oil, used in rubs for its warm, minty-sweet scent and gentle warming feel.

Eucalyptus globulus leaf
Blue gum leaf, a tree that lines Kenyan highways and farms, brings the green, camphor-fresh note of the balm.

Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil
English lavender oil rounds off the sharp edges of mint and eucalyptus with a soft, calm, floral scent.

Carthamus tinctorius (safflower) flower extract
The orange flower heads of safflower, a plant grown for its oil and its colour, contribute a botanical extract to the formula.

Ligusticum chuanxiong oil
Oil from the rhizome of Sichuan lovage, an aromatic root used for centuries in traditional Chinese herbal practice.
The base is made of water, glycerin and plant-derived texture ingredients, and the complete list is printed on the carton. See the full ingredient list.
Wash the skin over the area of discomfort and dry it well.
Squeeze out the quantity you need from the tube. A thin layer is enough.
Spread the balm directly over the area of discomfort.
Gently press the balm onto the skin so that it settles and stays in place.
Use it once or twice a day, depending on how strong the discomfort feels.

The scent is fresh and herbal, mint and eucalyptus together. I put a thin layer on my knees after work and it feels cool first, then pleasantly warm. It has become part of my evening.
The tube slips into my bag without any fuss. Clean skin, a little balm, press lightly, done. I like how simple it is after a long day behind the wheel.
I left my name and number, the operator called the same evening and was patient with my questions. The tube arrived sealed and I paid when it reached me. The scent is lovely.
After a day on my feet in the shop I rub a little on my shoulders and neck. The cooling feel is the first thing I notice and it is very pleasant.
The lavender note makes it feel calm, not harsh like some rubs I have tried. I apply it before bed and look forward to it.
I apply it in the evening after the shamba. A thin layer goes a long way, so the tube feels generous. The mint and eucalyptus smell is very fresh.
Delivery took a couple of extra days because I am outside the town centre, but the operator kept me informed and the parcel arrived neat. I enjoy the fresh scent.
It is easy to squeeze out the amount I need and it spreads smoothly. I put it on my lower back in the evening and the cool-then-warm feeling is something I look forward to.
The smell takes me back to the herbal rubs my grandmother kept, but cleaner and fresher. I use it once or twice a day on my knees.
